The walking

The walking

The walking will feature both inland and costal walks. To provide as much variety and interest as possible, we will be utilizing public and private transports to relay us to different parts of the region. Journey times will be reasonably short.

Inland walks Algarve

Algarve Inland walks

Algarve

Costal walks

Will include walking on world renowned Tavira Island beach. Also walking through the “Salinas” salt pan areas of the Natural Reserve of Ria Formosa providing an understanding of salt production as well as a chance to appreciate and most certainly view the abundant bird life and general profusion of flora and fauna of this part of Ria Formosa Natural Reserve.

Inland walks

We walk through open countryside giving fine views across the surrounding hill sides. Also wooded areas where carob and olive are cultivated on farms and small holdings along with oranges and other citrus fruit, pomegranates, almonds and an abundance of other produce. Walks will also take us among the cork oaks giving a chance to understand the commercial and environmental importance of this product to the region. We will visit local villages where working life continues as it as for centuries including the traditional handmade bricks and tiles and enjoy the profusion of wildflowers all over the countryside.

Safety on Tour

Safety of our clients is paramount and we do monitor local events and conditions. If we feel it is necessary to modify an itinerary we will do so and naturally advise you immediately, although this is rare. Every attempt will be made to safeguard your holiday arrangements.
You should be aware of potential hazards as walking amongst mountains, hills and even in cities does involve an element of risk. Terrain underfoot can vary and you may find walking poles a great aid to mobility and they take some strain off the knees.  As the tour leader is responsible for the safety of all group members, he or she may adopt a more cautious approach depending on local conditions. Do be aware that itineraries planned for some tours may be varied on the spot because of unexpected events such as weather conditions.

The final decision for any change rests with our leader. We cannot be held responsible for disruption to planned itineraries arising from weather conditions or other situations beyond our control.  Every effort will be made to provide alternative activities and to ensure that you have the best possible Tour.

HEALTH & PHYSICAL CONDITION

Travelers in all tours should be in good physical condition and prepared to enjoy considerable walking, often over uneven surfaces. Many spectacular views are usually seen from the tops of hills that must be walked up. We ask you to appraise your own capabilities honestly. In addition, those individuals requiring special attention, treatment or whose condition limits their activities must disclose this information to us. We reserve the right to decline to accept or retain any person as a tour member should such a person’s health, mental condition, physical infirmity or attitude jeopardize the operation of the tour and the rights welfare or enjoyment of other participants or their own self.

WALKING THE ALGARVE FROM TAVIRA

Walk and explore the Algarve's open countryside with pretty villages, historic monuments and recognized natural reserve areas like Ria Formosa.

The Algarve is famous for its fine beaches, golf courses and beautiful coastline but, it is generally not thought of in terms of open countryside; it is however truly wonderful rambling country.

We will explore the surrounding villages, located on fertile limestone and characterized by an abundance of orange and lemon groves, olive, carob, fig and almond trees scattered in fields full of flowers.

keen bird-watchers may wish to visit Castro Marim in the fens and marshes of the “Reserva Natural do Sapal “, famous for their flamingos, or enjoy other local sightseeing tours.

Tavira Local Area
Tavira is architecturally, one of the most attractive towns in the Algarve. Its origin dates back around 2.000 BC, and during the Moorish occupation the fishing industry of this town was of great importance. In the 17th Century its port, located at the Gilão River, played a significant role shipping wine, salt and dried fish. After the earthquake in 1755 the town was completely rebuilt with many fine 18th Century buildings and 37 churches. The church of Santa Maria do Castelo has been erected on the site of a Mosque.
Tavira still is an unspoiled jewel at the eastern end of the Algarve. Located about 20 miles from the border with Spain it is an old, attractive fishing town, which still retains its original charm. Fishing is still a mainstay of the local economy and the fishing boats are moored just beyond the old market. Sometimes referred to as the Venice of the Algarve, with some fine Renaissance architecture, numerous churches, tree-lined squares and a certain romantic air. You will find fine examples of medieval houses complete with Gothic windows and doorways.
